Saldanha Bay
Saldanha Bay is a town on the northern most point of Langebaan Lagoon. Originally an industrial town linked to Saldanha Steel, it is becoming more popular with visitors as it offers a great lagoon experience as well.
One of the major differences to Langebaan is that Saldanha Bay is closer to the open ocean, and visitors will experience more of a sea and ocean feeling, than that of being on a lagoon.
Saldanha boasts some lovely beaches and just as easy access to watersports as Langebaan.
The town itself is pretty unprepossessing, so just like with Club Mykonos, you need to ignore everything behind the seashore. The Saldanha Bay beach and waterfront are extremely attractive and easily accessible. There are a number of B&Bs and self catering options on Strand Street, which are right on the beach. This is where I'd recommend staying if you are visiting Saldanha.
Alternatively the Saldanha Protea Hotel is right on the water and an attractive alternative as well.
I can't believe the contrast between the lagoon front properties and the town just two streets back from the shore!
Things to do
- It is an easy day trip to Cape Columbine lighthouse, Tieties Baai and Paternoster.
- You can take boat trips from Saldanha to the islands.
- Visit Jacobsbaai and enjoy the Atlantic Ocean. Jacobsbaai is a quiet little town on the Atlantic. It has great crayfish diving.
