Namaqualand Flowers - West Coast

Namaqualand Flowers at Langebaan

Everyone expects that you need to go all the way to Namaqualand to see the Namaqualand flowers at spring time.

Most people don't realise that Postberg Nature Reserve at the West Coast National Park in Langebaan has probably the best display of Namaqualand spring flowers of anywhere.

Postberg is open in August and September and is accessible as a day trip from Langebaan or even Cape Town. You'll have to start very early from Cape Town though :-).

Get to Postberg early as it really gets crowded when the flowers are in full bloom. Also remember that the flowers don't open if the day isn't sunny.

Directions to Postberg from Langebaan: Enter the West Coast National Park at Langebaan and follow the road south past Seeberg and Geelbek. Turn right at the T-Junction (Postberg is signed so you shouldn't have a problem. You'll drive on a tar road until you pass Kraal Bay. From Kraal Bay and Preekstoel, the road become a dirt road. The drive through Postberg is circular. Drive the eastern leg first as it is the shorter part. You want to drive the longer distance (ie the western side), in a southwards direction, with the sun behind you, so that you can see the flowers best. The namaqualand daisies face the sun and close if the weather becomes overcast or cloudy and cold.

Don't miss Plankiesbaai on the Atlantic side, and the lookout (uitkyk) on the lagoon side.
